1 January 1998 will see the writing of a new chapter in the history of Western Sweden, with the creation of an entirely new county and region: Västra Götaland.
Its creation will also see the end of the out-of-date provincial boundaries of the past 300 years, in favour of a new organization that will be strong, effective, tightly knit and well defined.

The creation of Västra Götaland means that, defying mathematics, three will go into one; with the existing three administrations becoming one.
And, with effect from 1999, Västra Götaland will also have its own regional organization for self-government, which will be led by a directly-elected Regional Assembly. The work involved here is being undertaken by the Council for Western Sweden.
